Module 8: Advanced Market Concepts
Institutional Trading Concepts
6 min read
Banks, funds and corporations trade differently from retail traders, and their flows shape the market.
How institutions trade
Institutions often execute very large orders over time to reduce market impact, using algorithms and multiple venues. Their motives include hedging, investment, client business and central-bank policy, not only speculation.
Month-end and quarter-end rebalancing, and benchmark fixes such as the WM/Reuters 4pm London fix, can create predictable bursts of activity.
A realistic view
Retail traders cannot see institutional order books. Be sceptical of anyone claiming to know exactly what "smart money" is doing. Focus on what you can control: preparation, risk and execution.
Key takeaways
- Institutions dominate volume and have varied motives.
- Fixes and rebalancing create activity spikes.
- Be sceptical of "smart money" certainty.
